Abstract

When Hurricane Helene struck Asheville, North Carolina, flood waters reached historic levels to devastate parts of this mountain city and its environs.  The storm shattered lives and livelihoods.  Helene also cut off the area’s water supply for months.   Why was the inundation so horrific?    How did the city meet the sudden demands of its residents for both potable and non-potable water?  The author, an historical geographer who moved to Asheville on the eve of Helene, offers a first-hand perspective.
