In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, the little known battle of Averasboro is reviewed. Though this battle is often referenced as a skirmish before the Battle of Bentonville, it was an important victory for the Confederates and would prove to be their last. The battle of Averasboro is interesting because it was an effective use of terrain by a smaller force to stop the advance of a much larger army. Situated between the Cape Fear and Black rivers in the Cape Fear River basin it was an area that was full of long needle pines and wetlands. General Hardee's placement of his troops in a deep defense is reminiscent of General Andrew Jackson's troop placement during the battle of New Orleans. Though largely outnumbered, Hardee's small force was able to delay General Sherman's troops within the area for two days, allowing General Johnston the time to gather his forces at Bentonville.
