The Impact of Retirement Migration on Carteret and Brunswick Counties, N.C.
Abstract
[First Paragraph] The elderly represent the fastest-growing segment of the American population. Today, one in eight people are 65 and over; by 2030, one in five will be (U. S. Bureau of the Census 1984, 1990). Over the last three decades, retirees have moved increasingly to the Sunbelt. North Carolina has been a major receiver primarily during the last two. The kind of impact these retirees are having, particularly on sparsely populated, nonmetropolitan counties, is of particular interest to planners and other decision makers.
