NCGS Annual Conference Update

With the conference just a few days away, we wanted to send out another thank you to all the participants and people involved in ensuring this conference is a success. Tim Mulrooney, Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental, Earth, and Geospatial Sciences at North Carolina Central University, has been essential in the planning process over the past few months. Jeff Essic, GIS and Data Librarian at NC State University Libraries, has agreed to be our Keynote Speaker and we look forward to an interesting presentation about the array of geospatial data available in North Carolina and how it is revolutionizing the field of geography. Additionally, several scholars from around the state will be presenting their state-of-the-art research on a variety of important spatial topics pertinent to the world today (see conference program below). Thank you to everyone who has given their time and effort throughout the planning process to make this conference a success.

The conference will begin at 9:00 am with an introduction by Vice-President Joyce Clapp and President Jesse M. Lane. Shortly after the introduction, oral presentations will begin and last until approximately 11:50 am when we will break for lunch and the keynote address. Presenters from NCCU, UNC Greensboro, and UNC Pembroke will present on a variety of topics including electoral geography, sustainable development, food environments, sea-level rise, health geographies, military geographies, and biogeography. After lunch and keynote, poster sessions will begin. Topics include meteorology, health geographies, food environments, big data, environmental geographies, and viticulture. The conference will conclude with our annual business meeting where we will discuss the future of the Society and elect new officers. If you are interested in nominating yourself or someone you know as an officer, please visit the officer nominations page.

If you would like to attend the conference, registration is still open. To register, all you need to do is sign up as a member of the North Carolina Geographical Society and pay the one year membership fee. The conference will be hosted by NCCU on March 17, 2023 in the Mary M. Townes Science Building. If you need additional information such as directions or specific details on parking, see the Spring 2023 Meeting page. We look forward to seeing everyone conference!
